Web Templates, The Real Cost?

Web Templates, The Real Cost?

When promoting your business online, its tempting to use one of those free or cheap web design templates offered by Wix or Weebly.

Cheap is great and perhaps paying for a professional is hard to justify? Right?

With website templates, you are in control and its cheap. Certainly you can create an okay looking website with minimal effort, quickly. But then there is the content to consider such as compelling copy or images.

How much are you really in control and is there a hidden cost?

Here are some factors to consider:

Me Too Syndrome
Imagine turning up at a party with the same outfit on as someone else? Using a template could mean another company – or worse a rival – could have the same, identical website. What does that say about your brand?

Lack of Customisation
White label products are always going to limit how much you can change. Too often they lack features or the content is too rigidly presented to read well or set out you company message or service.

Unrealistic Expectations
Many popular web hosting adverts like those by Yell, Go Daddy or 1&1 make misleading promises that make you believe that just by having a website ‘the world will come to you’.

This may have been true in 1996, but the way people find your website today is a much more complex (and costly) affair. In fact there is a whole SEO industry waiting to tell you otherwise.

Search Engine Optimisation
Many templates do not offer ways to optimise content, tags, descriptions or page titles.

Lack Of Support
What happens when you run into problems? If it is a free site probably nothing.

If your site is with one of those big hosts, good luck in that support queue waiting for ‘Richard’ in Kolkata to help you or waiting for that ‘support ticket’ you submitted last week to get answered.

Potential Security Issues
Many sites use WordPress, its free and used by over 60 million sites worldwide and there are dozens of templates and developers offering solutions.

In 2013, 3 million plus blocked log-in attempts were reported on WordPress. An unknown group of hackers has also been reported to have attempted to create a botnet of infected servers by creating a vast network of infected WordPress installations.

Cheap Brochure Websites
There are 1000’s of single page starter websites out there, that give you a web presence. But the site tells you nothing about the product or service, has little information of value and gives the impression of a fly by night enterprise that will probably not deliver on its service. Having no website is not necessarily worse!

When choosing what to do, free or cheap website template designs seem to be a ‘no-brainer’. But what will the real cost be for your business later?
